Winter Update 2024

We start this update with an image showing John Padget applying gloss paint to the inside of the carrier frames in readiness for the delivery of the bunker and the side tanks. There is still a considerable amount of work to do on these frames before the bunker and tanks can be fixed down to them. This includes pipework for the vacuum and air brakes and lubrication to the trailing bogie pivot, also components, yet to be made, for the rear coupling.

The bunker has just arrived at the workshop.

One of the volunteers at the workshop, David Pumfrey, collected the bunker and the cab platework, delivering these parts to the workshop during the first week in September. This was followed at the end of September, by David delivering to us the side tanks. As can be seen from the following images, both bunker and side tanks have temporarily been placed on the carrier frames, hence the urgency to get the painting finished on the frames. Although the holes in the front and rear cab plates for the curved angle to attach the roof had been drilled by the fabricator, the angle had not been sent to him therefore this operation needed to be carried out at the workshop, since we had taken delivery of these lengths of angle at the same time as the rolled roof sections. Once the angle had been drilled it was cut to length, cleaned and a coat of primer applied. Stuart Fletcher has now finally set up the trailing bogie frames and stretcher for them to be riveted together, which as can be seen from the photographs below has now taken place. He has also machined the axlebox underkeeps and has now turned his attention to finishing the machining of the journal surfaces in the axleboxes themselves. Once these operations have been carried out it will be possible to fit the axleboxes into the frames, followed by trial fitting the wheelsets and bedding in the bearing surfaces. Due to the size of the springs being used to support the worsted pads, collars have been made to fit over the pegs in the bottom of the underkeeps to keep them centralised. These are also shown in one of the images.
